large area rug DIY for under $30

A few years ago, when I visited my friend Kyrie's dorm room, I was beyond impressed with her area rug. I remember my initial assumption was that she didn't spend a ton of money on it because she just wouldn't have. But I was puzzled because it was seriously the coolest.

I eventually (or probably 2 seconds after walking in the room) commented on it and asked where she got such an glamorous rug.

This might have been the moment I knew we'd be friends forever.

She made it....
with carpet squares and duct tape!
Genius.

It's been a few weeks in the making (trial and ERROR), but I finally have my own DIY area rug- and I L.O.V.E it!

So awesome, right!?!?

I happened to find my carpet squares (randomly) on Craigslist.
But here are a few tips for going through a carpet store.
1. Call around to several places and ask if they sell carpet squares (most do) and what kind of selection they have.
2. Go to more than one store before you buy.
3. I don't think it would hurt to ask if they'd take $1/piece.
They were asking $2 for large squares but I asked. I cut the cost of my project in half.
4. Chances are you won't find enough of the same color to make a monochromatic carpet. But, you should try to stick to one type of carpet to get a cohesive effect.
5. Buy a couple extra squares if you can so that you have more to work with to get a pattern you're satisfied with.

Ok. moving on:

This was attempt #1. I learned some hard lessons.

I kind of lost my patients...big time! I didn't take into consideration that Kyrie made a much smaller rug and the flipping over process probably went better for her than it did for me.

But sometimes the best DIYs take some perseverance.

I did a little research, found an adhesive that's made specifically for carpet, and tried again.

I started out by tossing the squares down on the floor and playing around with the arrangement. My first attempt would have actually left me with a completely different layout:

but the second time around I had somehow realized there was another way:

After switching squares around for a little while playing with the colors, I got to the real work. Surprisingly, it took less than an hour.

Here's the adhesive I used. You can find in the carpet department of your hardware store. I payed under $4 a box and used about one and a half rolls.

I used a regular pair of scissors to cut strips. The length varied depending on which seam I was binding, but ultimately didn't really matter as long as you use enough to form a bond.

You then peel off the white piece, lift the edge of the carpet square off the ground, and slide it under halfway. Then firmly press the square back down, take the second square and put it over the other half.

You've got yourself a sturdy seal. Now, just do this until every seam is connected.

There will be some places where the pieces don't quite come together and there is a gap. You can't really tell unless you look closely. I did learn from my experience that my first layout had many more of these gaps because of the number of times four corners came together.

I had bought some colored squares with my purchase just in case. I honestly hadn't planned on using them. I thought about leaving the small squares open to the hardwood. I thought it looked kind of cool. I thought about matching a fabric to my new wall art (that I'll be sharing later) but passed on that idea too. When I realized that the four colored squares coincidently matched my new art perfectly, it was a no brainer. I used a regular pair of scissors (although, a carpet blade probably wouldn't have hurt my hand so dang much) to cut the squares down to the appropriate size.

I also bought 4 rolls of shelf liner at the Dollar Store to use as a gripper. I haven't done this yet. The rug is heavy enough that it doesn't slide around. I might do it just to add some protection for my hardwood floors.

There you have it! I am so happy with it. I love how it grounds the room, adding a coziness that was previously lacking. And, of course, I love that the entire project cost under $30!

My only question is what type of carpet did you purchase? Fluffy? :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Thanks for commenting Danielle! So I honestly don't know the technical name for the carpet I used- I call it 'small shag.' It is kind of fluffy. In fact, I would imagine that the shaggier/fluffier the carpet, the better because it will help hide the seams. I think the most important thing is to be consistant with texture throughout.

    5. Ok I saw a version of this same idea which I think is awesome btw. An artist was making large area artwork rugs in a very similar fashion only he strayed far from the straight lines and went more of whatever. He kept his colors monochromatic mostly unless doing a custom match to the homeowners decor. He even went as far as. Mixing different textures. Alot of his designs were somewhat absttract But not reallyy over. The top. some Simple wavey stripes Across the whole the thing to more extravagant designs such as one that was coppied after a local. Artists landscape oil painting. He used different textures of carpet to create the r different textures in the landscape... So on and so forth. Fitting the r pieces together wasnt too hard because he would just lay the adjoining next piece partly under the pieces previously laid trace the line needed to make those two. Pieces fit then cut it and join them. He actually started his craft with the same tape to connect His pieces but eventually switched to stitching the pieces to a backing. This was an option that was made easy after he was selling his work for big money but in time staying so busy that he eventually burned out and stopped making rugs all together. I watched him do a huge portrait rug of Bob Marley using contrasting textures of carpeting . Rougher multi-textured carpet to create his dreadlocks in the more tightly woven Berber to create the skin ECT ECT ECTand it was definitely a masterpiece ...and it was gigantic! The idea of simplicity in the rugs made in your fashion is what I really like because it is simple enough for anyone to create their surroundings as seen fit only limited by their own imagination If you want to get carried away I'm sure there still people out there that want Bob Marley portraits fashioned out of their carpets. All Star Wars scenes, or team logos, over a copy of the pattern from the antique quilts your grandmother passed down to you from years and years gone by that you have hanging on the wall. Or maybe dinosaurs, or maybe a black on black design only shown by the different textures of carpets but all the same color. Or white on white with the same idea. Or maybe even ... Or...Or...
Anyways thanks for letting me share . and back to you ..."Scoop of Sherbert"

  9. Hi; adding my voice to the love for this project. It looks terrific! Love the colors and the design, first-rate.

... One question, please: When I envision "carpet squares" I think of those 1 foot x 1 foot (or 18" x 18") carpet tiles with smooth foam/sometimes sticky backing. But the ones you used appear to be something different; they look like small pieces of standard "wall to wall" carpet with the woven backing, and seam binding around the edges. Are these sold at carpet stores as tiny remnants? I asked one guy at a small local store for "carpet squares" and he thought I meant the foam-backed carpet tiles, which he didnt' have, and we parted, mutually confused. I'm not sure what I'm looking for, here... Thanks a bunch for any help on this.

    1. They may call them carpet SAMPLES. Tell him they have rug backing and look like smaller rugs :)

    2. Thank you!
I have heard them called samples before too. I went to a few different local stores and they all had them. Basically they are the ones that you flip through- or are displayed- on the sales floor. All the places I went to had extra piles of them to pick through. I ultimately went with some I found on a Craigslist ad for a store going out of business.
      Hope that's helpful.
      Sorry for the confusion!

  12. My dad did this in the '70's and the rug was so cool that when we sold our house the people insisted that the rug come with it. When he made it, he ironed the duct tape so it molded better to the samples. Just make sure to lay a towel or cloth over the tape, don't iron directly on it.

  15. This is such a great idea! I went to the local carpet store today to rent a carpet cleaning maching and remembered this post. I asked if they had carpet samples, and the owner led me into a back room piled high with samples and told me it was $1.00 for the "big" samples, but she usually just gave away the smaller ones. I picked out the two big ones and the rest small ones, then told the lady I had to pay something for the small ones - she said they would be 10 cents each. What a bargin!

  16. I'm currently working on doing our entire basement this way! Hadn't thought of cutting the small squares to "hide" the holes, but that sounds great!!! I also paid only $1.00 for the large pieces & sometimes, I got a few free with my purchases. I'm using greys, blues & greens & am using many different styles of carpet for a real eclectic look. 1. you could cut out circles for some of the carpet squares and then cut out like four of the surounding carpet squares' corners so they fit together like a puzzle and that would make different shapes throughout it..? I love this is idea I'm a college student and have been looking to make my dorm more homey, its such a great idea!!!

  42. I also sewed the pieces together. I did not use carpet samples but the good scraps of carpet I had gathered. If you know someone who lays carpet, that would be a good place to start. I used all kinds so it had a patchwork look. You can rent a tool that uses an adhesive strip to glue large pieces together. I would guess that an iron would do the trick also. Very good idea for big rug and big space but small budget.

  44. my hubby did carpet for years. he taught me a few tricks before he went ahead to the angels. #1... you don't have to have "carpet squares"... remnants will work perfectly for the inside area. the squares are nice for the outside border, but inside, you will get cleaner lines if you do not have "binding" on the carpet. if you can lay your hands on carpet tape, you can turn literally any rementant into an area rug. just staple the tape to the top, hot glue it to the bottom, and smash the tape into it with a can of veggies. i have the supplies gathered to do a wall to wall carpet, using this method, and i haunted Lowe's, Menards, and Home Depot, until i had gathered enough bargains. 2' x 3' cuts. laid into a square, will need a 1' square for the center accent. skip the duct tape. it flakes apart quickly. they sell carpet seaming tape for 6.99 at most home improvement stores, 60' to the roll.... you just apply an old hot iron, and it is permanent. tis actually the way professionals seem your carpet.

and ps... the carpet shown in pic is a "berber". that is actually what i have gathered.

    ReplyDelete
  45. On the pieces you cut, ( the blue), how are they holding up? I would think that since there is no binding on the edges, it would lose fibers a lot. Are you having this trouble?

    ReplyDelete
  46. My mom made the carpet in both mine and my brothers rooms when we were growing up. She and her friend next door actually did the "dumpster diving thing" to find carpet remnants. My room was lime green, yellow and orange and my brothers was red, white and blue. I wish I had pictures, because they were beautiful. This certainly brings back wonderful memories! She also ended up doing a patchwork carpet for our converted garage made into a den. And someone asked if they would hold up? MANY years, many of my brothers football player friends rough-housing in the floor, several dogs, much carpet shampooing and just lots of life later....when my parents sold their house, the buyers wanted those carpets left there...they LOVED them!

  55. Someone may have mentioned this already, but when cutting the carpet squares to size, you'll see less gaps if you use a faux fur cutting trick and comb the fibers away from your cut. That way, when you ruffle the fibers back up and look at it again, there will be some overhang to cover the gaps. :)

  63. I was planning to spend several hundred dollars this weekend on an area rug to replace my old, enormous area rug. I am so thrilled to have found this; thanks so much!

I think that I will hot glue or otherwise attach some thick fabric piping around the edges to help it not fray.

Also, another alternative to the shelf liners to prevent slippage is to use silicone caulk. Squeeze fairly thick lines all the way down the back of the rug, about 4-6 inches apart and let it dry.

Anonymous, I think that she said a friend made a small version of this in her dorm room using duct tape, but when she made her first attempt on her rug and used duct tape when she flipped it over it fell apart. She did use the carpet adhesive tape for the actual end product. Also, If you did find enough samples of one color rug you could use Rit dye or something like that to "paint" or stencil a pattern. Of course, if you found enough samples in light colors, even if they were different colors, you could dye them all one, darker color and go from there with patterns/stencils/etc.

    1. Thank You! Thank You! Thank You, for posting this creative idea! I have been looking for a new 4X6 area rug for my small entry way, for several years now, without any success. The selection has been very limited and when I have found a rug that I love, the pile has been so thick that I can't close my front door or the coat closet door over it. I actually had a salesperson suggest that I cut off part of my front door and closet door to accommodate the rug??????? ( And let the cold or hot air in? ) This project gives me many more options. Thanks Again!

  72. If you don't mind "dumpster diving", you might be able to get your squares free. We did this in our house in the 1970s, only we stapled the scraps to the floor with an industrial staple gun. Not smart, I know...I was a teen at the time, and did my bedroom with scraps from remnants, rather than squares.
How does this hold up to a cleaning? Not that we ever cleaned our patchwork floor, but I certainly need to be able to clean any rugs on our floors, since we have animals.

  75. I have been researching how to do something similar for my classroom, with a low pile carpet. Have been looking at the carpet tiles, but don't want to use the adhesive. I'm going to check into local carpet companies now, and see what they have that will work. I had thought of using duct tape, and was actually googling how to attach and it brought up your blog. Thank you for sharing, and if I succeed, I'll let you know! Classroom rugs are $350 and up! No can do.

  85. My husband is a carpet Sales Rep and they are Samples that come on a board. He uses them when he goes to carpet stores to show them new products. The ones in your illustration actually look to me like Mohawk or Shaw samples and a regular carpet. Larger piece is on once side and the smaller colored ones are on the flip side of the sample board. You can walk into any carpet showroom and ask if they have any old sample boards they want to get rid of and many times they will give them to you for free. He used to have regular people off the street that would drop by and ask for the old samples and it saved them from having to trash them. The products change CONSTANTLY...especially right now, they are having some shipping issues with carpet coming in a timely manner getting here from China, so a lot of manufactures are ordering product from Germany instead. So people that are interested in doing this project it would be a great time to do it. If anyone could come up with a creative idea to use wood and laminate flooring, that would be a great time too to ask for old samples of that..wood deliveries are having major issues. Im thinking of using his old wood samples that he has to throw out to trim out my flower bed after paiting them and distressing them and hammering each piece into the ground along the hedge...just a thought. who knows???? BTW Oxy Clean for laundry works great to get pet stains out of your carpet or get a new dog, if you cant get it trained by 6 months its never going to get it.

  86. I love this. My house is all tile and I want rugs but I have 4 dogs. When they poop, pee or throw up in the house even with all the tile they always seem to go to what small rugs I have in the house. You can only clean these to many times. I can do this and change out sections when needed. Thanks for the great idea.

  118. If you do put any type of carpet on your hardwood floors always use a slip proof mat under it. Even if it doesn't move around or shift the sand that goes through the carpet from your shoes and the back of the carpet is very rough and is like sandpaper. It will scratch up your hardwood floors over time.
